It's not that the low-SES parents do not care about their children while the high-SES parents do care about their children. It's that the low-SES parents -- for many reasons -- interact with their children differently than high-SES parents interact with their children.
Research shows that the quantity/quality of parent/child verbal interaction from birth to kindergarten for low-SES parents is -- on average -- substantially inferior to that of high-SES parents. This research shows that this holds true even in low-SES families where the child's physical needs are consistently met -- that is, these low-SES parents are not neglecting their children, they are simply not giving their children enough verbal interaction and enough high-quality verbal interaction.
